An Irish Welcome in the Heart of France: The Tradition of the Candle in the Window

As the light fades each evening in the Deux-Sèvres, we observe a quiet tradition: burning a single candle in one of our upstairs windows. While our home is now in France, this gesture was born far from here in the West of Ireland.

Historically, a candle in the window told passing travellers that warmth and welcome awaited them inside. It was a beacon for family members returning from afar and a signal of a safe haven for those seeking shelter during times of discrimination in 17th-century Ireland. Today, we keep that light burning to honour the Irish origins of Graeme’s family—a gesture of hospitality that crosses borders and welcomes all.

A Perfect Stopover for Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle Pilgrims

Our guesthouse is uniquely positioned for history lovers and hikers. We sit beside one of the oldest pilgrim routes to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, a path that winds through the beautiful mediaeval towns of Thouars, Airvault, Parthenay, and Niort.

If you are walking this historic route, the nearby Abbey at Airvault is a must-see. Known as a ‘walking church,’ its architecture allows travellers to move discreetly during Mass—a thoughtful design for pilgrims who need to keep their muscles moving!

Cycle-Friendly Accommodation on the Vélo Francette

You don’t have to arrive on foot to find a welcome here. We are situated very close to the Vélo Francette, the famous national cycle route stretching from Ouistreham on the northern coast to La Rochelle on the Atlantic.

As a featured stay on the Accueil Vélo (France Vélo Tourisme) website, we offer specialized amenities for cyclists:

  • Secure Bike Storage: A well-equipped bike shed to keep your equipment safe.

  • Laundry Services: Help with washing and drying clothes after a day on the road.

  • EV Charging: For those travelling on four wheels, we provide a dedicated electric vehicle charger.

Modern Comforts and a Warm French Breakfast

Whether you are here for a pilgrimage, working in the region, or simply breaking a long journey through France, we provide a restful environment. Our guest rooms feature comfortable beds, excellent Wi-Fi, and plenty of power sockets for all your devices.

In the morning, your journey continues after a copious French breakfast, a fresh weather report, and local advice on the next stage of your road.
